Mystery Magenta Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Beach Raises Concerns of Likely Algal Bloom

Officials in Tasmania are working to identify a magenta ooze that has appeared on a isolated coast, with certain experts anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Widespread Presence Along Beaches

The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a stretch of a southern bay about 60km south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been documented on areas of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.

Samples Gathered for Testing

Specimens have been gathered and submitted to the regulatory body for examination. A spokesperson commented that "algae outbreaks are a normal phenomenon in response to shifts in food sources, heat, rain or illumination".

"These blooms are at times called reddish tides because the blooms can turn the water reddish," the official noted. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with several kinds serving as a major source of food for animals in the oceanic food chain."

"The primary reason of red tides in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."
