Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
